NEW YORK (Billboard) - Jailed rapper Shyne (real name: Jamal Barrow) will crown his new deal with Island Def Jam with "Godfather ... Buried Alive," due Aug. 10.
A spokesperson did not respond to requests for more information about the set, which is understood to feature recordings Shyne made prior to his 2000 incarceration for gun possession and assault. He is not expected to be released from jail before 2009.
The first single, "More or Less," was produced by Kanye West, winner of the best new artist prize at the BET Awards Tuesday, and has already begun receiving airplay in New York. Although his ability to promote "Godfather" is severely hampered by his sentence, Shyne is expected to sit for an interview on a future episode of ABC's "20/20."
The rapper's musical career was derailed just as it got going. His self-titled debut album on mentor Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy label was released in September 2000 and has sold more than 900,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
But the following year, Barrow was sentenced to prison for his part in a 1999 shootout at Manhattan's Club New York. Three people were wounded in the incident, which reportedly started after a patron insulted Combs. Barrow fired a gun in the crowded club and hit at least one bystander.
No charges were filed against pop superstar Jennifer Lopez (news), who was with Combs that evening. Combs and his bodyguard, Anthony "Wolf" Jones, were charged with gun possession, but later acquitted.
